Basilique Saint Patrick's Basilica

Saint Patrick’s Church, inaugurée en 1847 pour répondre aux besoins de la communauté irlandaise de Montréal en pleine croissance, s’impose rapidement comme un repère majeur grâce à son architecture néogothique et à son implantation sur un promontoire dominant la ville. Au fil du développement urbain, l’église se retrouve intégrée au tissu montréalais moderne, tout en conservant son importance symbolique. Élevée au rang de basilique mineure en 1989, puis reconnue comme lieu historique national et monument national du Québec, elle demeure un site patrimonial d’envergure. En 2025, la restauration des escaliers du côté est sera entreprise, un projet financé en grande partie par le Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec, tandis que la Fondation de restauration de Saint Patrick complétera le financement grâce aux dons entièrement consacrés à la préservation du bâtiment.

Saint Patrick’s Church, opened in 1847 to serve Montreal’s growing Irish community, quickly became a landmark thanks to its Gothic Revival architecture and its prominent position overlooking the city. As Montreal expanded, the church found itself surrounded by modern development, yet it retained its symbolic presence. Elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica in 1989 and later recognized as both a National Historic Site of Canada and a Monument National of Quebec, it remains a significant heritage site. In 2025, the Basilica will undertake restoration work on its east‑side stairs, a project largely funded by the Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec, with the remaining costs covered through donations to the St. Patrick’s Restoration Foundation, whose contributions go entirely toward preserving the building.
