Information détaillée

She: kon and welcome to the Saint Francis Xavier Mission, a historic mission first established in 1667 when the Kanienkeha'ka (Mohawk) community located in the northern part of the territory in Kentake, now known as Laprairie, Quebec. The community moved four more times due to economic, agricultural and political changes, and settled on its current site in 1716 in Kahnawake, meaning "On the rapids" and it was here that a more permanent church was built in 1720.

The mission displays numerous gifts of France and historical treasures of Aboriginal, Canadian and European artifacts dating from the 17th to 20th centuries. The tomb of Saint Kateri is located in the church on the right side, near the altar.

The museum contains ivory crucifixes, religious artifacts, statues, paintings, manuscripts, sculptures, antique clothing, arrowheads, flints, tomahawks, corn grinders and traditional beads. Among its precious treasures are the many representations of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, including the oldest known oil painting (1690) by Father Claude Chauchetiere S.J., its spiritual director.

Join us on Friday September 8th, 2023 from 10h00 to 15h00 and Saturday, September 9th, 2023 from 9h00 to 15h00 for either a guided or self-guided visit of the church.
